Visillos
Visillos was completed in 2004 out of 2 blocks of balsa wood. It is varnished and stained, with painted details and it stands about 12 inches tall. It sits on a polished and varnished hardwood base. Visillos was inspired by Amalia Hernández's Ballet Folclórico de México and by a performance by "Los Mexicas", a college-level Mexican folk dance group I often had the opportunity to watch rehearse and perform. Dance is a very important part of the Mexican tradition and is performed at key moments in community life, such as coming-of-age ceremonies and religious events. This sculpture attempts to capture the flair, the movement, and the vibrant colors of the Mexican folk dancer's skirt.
